My Cop!
…or as we call it, the I-COP Program
Most of us know who our attorney, physician, stylist, dentist, and mail carrier is by name. Why not know the name of your local “neighborhood police officer”?
What is the I-COP Program?
Before suburban life became mobile and disconnected, police officers and residents knew each other by name and worked together to protect their community. Trying to recapture that, we have introduced the Intra-Community Oriented Patrol program or “ICOP” to the residents and businesses.
Calling for the cooperation of residents and businesses to help reduce crime, the fear of crime, and to enhance the quality of life through proper police strategies is not new. The Police Department will commence a new effort to provide a point of contact for property owners or tenants with whom to communicate with the Police Department on a regular or as-needed basis.
The ICOP Program is designed to give all persons who live or work in the Village of Wauconda the ability to know at least one police officer well enough to act as a “partner” in identifying and helping to solve problems associated with keeping the peace, keeping the neighborhoods free from crime and traffic concerns, and maintaining the general appearance of the community.
The ICOP program essentially will put officers in closer contact with local residents and businesses. We expect to present the community with more personal, one-on-one communication, while also providing code enforcement for Wauconda.

What is Code Enforcement?
Another purpose of ICOP is to educate and assist property owners in the Village’s Property Maintenance Code, Nuisance Abatement Code, and other ordinances that, if violated over time, provide an environment for criminal activity and general decline of the appearance of the Village.
If a community looks safe, if a community is well maintained, if a community is free of debris and abandoned cars, if a community is free of conditions that attract undesirable people, then crime drops. That is something we can all stand behind.
